This Week @ Coys > The Sultan’s F50

An Italian in London by way of Brunei

Spotting this tutto rosso! M.Y. 1996 F50 on Coys’ website, for a moment I flashed on the prospect of screaming silly like some out-of-round brake – or deranged Elvis fan.

But sense and sensibility prevailed, if only long enough to tell you about this car – and its first owner.

Built to order for the Sultan of Brunei, His Majesty’s F50 would have numbered – according to the Daily Mirror‘s accounting – as one of 367 Ferraris in the Sultan’s garages.

So, if the Mirror‘s columns lined up, H.M. could drive one Ferrari every day of the year – with two to spare for leap year.

I’d like to think that this F50 was saved for February 23rd – Brunei’s National Day – but being a former British protectorate this 12 cylindered Italian would have had to compete for the Sultan’s attention amidst 362 Bentleys, 177 Jaguars, and 120 Rolls-Royces.

It’s good to be the Sultan.

So, like an abandoned race horse, this lonely F50 still capable of launching from standstill to 60 in 3.7 seconds and powering on to 202 mph, is now a cast-off from the world’s most enviable stable.

Friends, she needs a good home. Preferably one where she can be the center of attention.

  1. If someone asked me what “fast” looked like, I would tell them it would look like a Ferrari F50, straight up.

  2. Hell yeah.

  3. Hmm. F50 Spyder or 850 Spyder? Let’s check the bank account. 850 it is.

  4. Banana yellow – nice!

  5. Alas, that one is not mine, the 850 I had was lime green over black. Fiat offered that car in great colors, besides the lime and yellow, an orange, violet, red of course and I once saw a pink one, but that may have been a respray.

Every now and then I look for an 850, but never find one that’s worth buying.
