Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
That the country’s sovereignty is held by a highly soluble membrane of organized crime, botched colonialist meddling, and inner-bureaucratic corruption is really not the point; except to highlight that Haitians have been long suffering.
The magnitude seven earthquake has left untold thousands dead and has crippled an already fallen state.

Agreed. Love the sentence describing the government situation. Well-put. The reason that it’s in focus now that wide-spread corruption leads to feckless response to crises such as this.

All their government structures seemed to have collapsed. The Haitian president seemed particularly distraught about his palace.
