Video: LA, The Organism, By Night

by Gunnar Heinrich ::: YouTube ::: Los Angeles, CA by night & by air

IMAGERY by air can lend itself to the wildest of visual interpretations (the Dude discovered this during his magic carpet ride in The Big Lebowski).

Few more implausible yet eerily identifiable as the view of Los Angeles from lofty vantage that makes us believe that the traffic we watch flowing – liquid like – through the highways, connectors, on-ramps, boulevards, and side streets are as the pulmonary arteries of a sentient being.

That’s the magic of “Los Angeles At Night”. The film’s a reminder that we as people, doing are thing, going to and fro in our autos, are what make and, yes, drive a city.

And for all the steel, concrete, and asphalt,  LA is made wholly organic.

YouTube: W108/W109 S-Class Photo-Montage Set To Jazz

By Gunnar Heinrich | YouTube

AS we wind the work day to a close here on the east coast, a soothing review of Stuttgart’s past is in order.

This video TRT: 07:49 is a photo montage of the W108/W109 Mercedes-Benz Sonderklasse from the 70s (remember, the W109 refers to 300SEL only).

A mixture of jpegs from the web, period film screenshots, and company archival footage all featuring 280SE and 300SELs;  what’s noteworthy about this video is that it’s set to classic jazz rhythms of Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio.

A good effort by the YouTube poster. And a slick way to unwind.

Shanghai Lady Drives Off With Tow Truck… In Tow

By Gunnar Heinrich

MAD props to “Shanghai Lady,” whoever she is.

Apparently, a Chinese woman who (in good company) was about to watch a tow truck driver take away her Chevy Captiva, decided to take matter into her own hands when the guy couldn’t be reasoned with.

So, she did what so many of us would’ve longed to do.

She got in her all wheel drive SUV and drove off with his tow truck thanks to all that torque going to the grounded front wheels. Hilariously, all the tow truck driver could do was watch in disbelief and then, finally, chase after her down the street!

Shanghai Lady, you rock.

Aguilera Sings For Stuttgart

Hello.

By Gunnar Heinrich

DOING her best to channel Marlene Dietrich (not really), Christina Aguilera sang for a Mercedes TV spot in Benz’s home market this year.

And I missed it!

Ms. Aguilera lent her brassy voice and creative talent to a new song called “Hello.” We might suggest that it was a song engineered unlike any other because it was composed exclusively for Mercedes’ marketing campaign.

The lyrics:

Ah, yeah, oh yeah

They may have had their doubts
No matter what I’ve found
I have held my ground
Look at me, I’m still around

So dream on, dream on, yeah
Don’t ever let them steer you wrong
When life comes knocking
Gotta keep on rocking
Open that door and
Shout it to the world, singing

Hello, hello, ha
Here I am, here I go
Yeah, yeah
‘Cause I got love to give
And I got dreams to live
So hello, hello

Goodbye
See you later
Ciao

And where was I, might you ask, for this new wave of Aguilera promotions for Benz’s second gen. A-Class?

Good question.

In case you missed it (like I did) here’s the German press doing the full stop on Ms. Aguilera’s Tri-Star tryst.

Passing Shot: Jaguar XJS V12 Droptop

By Gunnar Heinrich

ACTION movie fans who love car chase scenes will have a good idea what would come next for this Jaguar XJS V12 décapotable.

Hint: “There’s a bomb on the bus!”

I’m not too sure how well my car would hold up to an accelerate/open door/ brake hard unhinging maneuver from a four thousand pound cat compared to that of a SoCal battle-hardened ‘66 GM TDH 5303 bus.

ADL devotees will note that the early 90s blue Jag that I spotted this weekend, and the flic’s M.Y. ‘91 XJS V12 are both the same body style as the recently posted Ebay listing that featured a later vintage XJS V12 convertible powered by Jaguar’s 6.0 Liter V12 (what’s pictured has the older 5.3 Liter powerplant).

Elegant car. Too bad so many have met hard ends.
