eBay Find: 1991 Mercedes 300SE

by Gunnar Heinrich ::: img via eBay ::: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

W126 aficionados be prepared to cut a cheque for $4,750. That’s the buy-it-now price an eBay seller from Cali wants for this magnificent black-on-cream 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. The standard wheelbase Sonderklasse has led a pretty quiet life since 2006 (only driven 5K miles or so). Granted, a car that sits is prone to as much trouble as a car that’s overworked – but aesthetically this big Benz is still in its Helmut Kohl prime. Purists note the original (and ergonomically confounding) Becker radio unit – though – conversely it appears as though the original paint has been scrubbed from the rims.

Sorely tempted…

Holy Parktronic, Batman! Mercedes W140 S-Class Recap

Dictator’s Choice: 1985 Euro Spec Mercedes-Benz 500SE

by Gunnar Heinrich ::: 1985  W126 Mercedes-Benz 500SE

WHAT better ride (aside from the W100 gen. 600 Pullman, of course) to ruthlessly rule the highway like some third world despot? The above grey market 1985 W126 generation 500SE is advertized as an S-Class that both time and the original owner forgot (to drive). Just 43K on the clock. Mixed emotions on the Euro lights / bumpers but check those period sporting rims – OEM? Resident W126 experts please confirm…

Thanks, Jim!

Replacement For Displacement: Mercedes S63 AMG

mercedes_300_sel_6.8_and_s63_AMG

by Gunnar Heinrich ::: img Daimler, AG ::: Mercedes 300SEL 6.8 & S63 AMG

CUTTING against the grain of precedent – as pictured above-left with this 1971 300SEL 6.8 AMG in full racing regalia (yes, 6.3 fans, there was such a thing as a 6.8 AMG) – Mercedes-Benz has integrated two turbo chargers as part of the 2010 S63 AMG’s  V8 powerplant.

AMG, Mercedes’ tuning power-haüs, has long been the champion of that tried ‘n true maxim, no replacement for displacement. But BMW’s M Division introduced bi-turbos to their V8 range which have managed to do what turbocharged engines do best – increase torque while simultaneously decreasing fuel consumption.

Mercedes had no choice but to follow, you see. Theirs – 5.5 Liter, Twin-Turbo V8 producing 571 bhp @ 5500 rpm and  900 NM of torque between 2500-3750 rpm; displacing 5461cc’s and making the S63 go to 60 in 4.5 seconds.

For gluttenous historical context: the 300SEL 6.8 AMG boasted 428 bhp @ 5500 rpm and 600 NM of torque; displacing 6835cc – 505 more than the 6.3.

DIY: Daimler To Release W126 S-Class DVD Manual

w126 repairBy Gunnar Heinrich | IMG Fuenfkommasechs

WANT to get your hands dirty with your 80s S-Class?

According to the web’s premiere W126 resource – Fuenfkommasechs.de – Daimler, AG will issue an updated “Information DVD” (which will be Windows 7 compliant) by April for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that reigned from 1979-1992.

Included in this bilingual technical guide (the English is a rough translation original German), are the full schematics, owner’s manual, and, naturally, parts catalogue so that the do-it-yourselfers of the world can take back their grosser Benz from that dreaded “auto-werkz” hack down the street.

Yeah, that’s right buddy. You can take your $100 an hour and shove it.

Fuenfkommasechs Returns! W126 Benz Site Extraordinaire

W126 Benzers rejoice! Fuenfkommasechs has returned!

There is a lack of quality sites that cover Germany’s best efforts of the 1980s. Fuenfkommasechs was, and once again, is an island in this desert. Following an extensive and beautiful overhaul, the premiere source for W126 info is back.

A veritable treasure trove of insightful commentary, history, archival imagery, technical material, and new photography, Fuenfkommasechs articulates the grandeur that is the W126 generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class, in large, and the magnificent 560SEL, in particular.

There is one catch: the site is published in German.

Luckily, the site compensates with an early online version of ASR, if you will, providing a practical, if rough, translation tool for most any language…including English.

Given that I share with you an undying ardor for Stuttgart’s greatest of elephantine chariots, I could not help but share this most remarkable site.

Enjoy!
