Hyundai Fights The Germans And…
By Gunnar Heinrich
WINS?
Not quite.
In a clever online marketing campaign, Hyundai has pitted its Genesis sedan against a number of German benchmark would-be rivals from Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
In random tests that demonstrated slalom, stopping, 180 degree turns, and 0-60, the Hyundai bested or equaled cherry picked competitors.
For example, they chose to pit the Genesis against the 750i and standard Boxster for the acceleration test; and the Korean trumped the Germans by 2/10th and a half second, respectively.
And then Hyundai fought the Mercedes-Benz E550 and BMW 550i in the 70-0 brake test; its Genesis again defeated both of its chosen rivals by stopping 11 and 10 feet shorter, respectively.
Does this a luxury performance sedan contender make? Sure.
It’s the same on-the-face-of-it analysis that enables a Kia dealer to tell its customers they can cross shop with a Maserati because both cars have leather interiors.
Is that statement legally correct?
Yes.
Is it fundamentally accurate?
Caveat emptor.
