Ebay Find of The Day > Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible

Rare 90′s V12 XJS

Your publisher has a fatal weakness for Jaguar XJS convertibles. But this lust comes with one caveat.

It was only after a decade of clumsy execution (the Mark II XJS (1981-1990) convertible earned its rightful place in Richard Porter’s Crap Cars), that for five graceful years (1991-1996) Coventry finally got it right with the gracefully executed drop top GT pictured.

During the 80s, many XJS models – many hardtops with the famed (or infamous) flying buttress C-pillars – were sold with a 5.3 liter V12 engine.

The powerplant was notorious for running hot or not running at all and being paired with a Three-Speed luxury-tuned transmission meant that the Mark II’s weren’t made for speed.

What makes this Ebay Jag unique is not its custom interior nor its glossy black finish, but the fact that it is one of the few XJS convertibles imported into the US that features the improved 6.0 liter V12 motor paired to a more accommodating Four-Speed auto.

The seller’s description reads like the brief insights into a turbulent, but passionate relationship.

“I have spent thousands of dollars as no expense has ever been spared in the loving maintenance of this car. Jaguar service intervals and parts have been followed to the letter, including new rotors, catalytic converters, belts, pads and fluids, all are fresh including new Mobil 1 and transmission fluid every year even when the mileage did not call for it.”

As on Monday morning EDT, two days remained and bidding reached $10,889.56.

Do I hear $10,889.57? What price for lust?

  1. 85,000 miles, for an XJS that is nearly worn out. Buy it for $10K and look forward to $10K per year to keep it running.

Unlike a Porsche 928 another drive it till it breaks, then junk it, the XJS is likely to nickel and dime you to death beyond the (expensive) routine maintenance, but probably no outlandishly enough to trash the car.

    Lovely car though

  2. It is an undeniably beautiful car, however the cost of ownership could easily outweigh the pleasure thereof.

85,000 miles is a good deal of miles, if it had 35,000 miles on it, I would be interested.

  3. Actually, considering the car’s age (early 90s) – 85,000 miles is actually a kind number when parsed out over a 15+ year timespan.

  4. True, Gunnar, but a car like that isn’t necessarily a daily-driver.

  5. Beautiful car.

Australians ‘fix’ them by dropping a 350 chev between the front strut towers… Its lighter, more powerful and more economical than the big cats original mota.

    I know…I know…its also sacrilegious.

  6. That’s smart sacrilege, Steane ;-)

  7. wow
i have one of these and they are only as good as it makes you feel when you drive one. cost wise if you look after it it wont hurt you to hard not like the porsche.

  8. I have a xjrs convertible. Over the years of owning it since 91. I have maintained and imprved it to a very high standard. Love it to bits.
